It was not even called Camp Hialeah yet. My mother and I were able to accompany him. It was rough snd raw back then. No paved streets. No running water (USArmy brought in water once a week). No electricity (portable generators were brought in to help). Stoves were powered by kerosene. No refrigerators -- just ice boxes. My dad and his friends would go hunting in the nearby foothills for small deer. There were no walls or fences yet -- security was a bit of an issue: trip wires tied to blasting caps were set up as jury-rigged security around our houses. We had a houseboy and a maid -- very friendly & very helpful. The black-market was already thriving. Post-war poverty was intense, but the Koreas were determined and resourceful. /S/ Jeff hart, son of E.F.Hart 060 186.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10632371500989683693noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3091645433792885128.post-38885353029283538042021-01-01T15:28:45.628+09:002021-01-01T15:28:45.628+09:00I was there from 76 to 78 when my father was stati...I was there from 76 to 78 when my father was stationed there at hialeah compound and was CSM Wooden and we lived outside of compound in a smaller compound called Usom I enjoyed it very much. None of the roads were paved then. We used US Army generators for power -- they were shared. The US Army also brought in water, and we used kerosene stoves. We had "informal" trip wire systems in our yards to discourage petty thievery. Like most Army Brats, I had fun here -- the houses in the photos look about the way they did nearly 70 years ago.Jeff Hartnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3091645433792885128.post-28727730984541120082017-09-30T22:40:46.766+09:002017-09-30T22:40:46.766+09:00Thank you for the pictures. Hialeah was one of the most best memories of our lives. We lived in the house across the street from the school. That cross walk you have pictures went directly to our door. At one time that would have been my kids out there drawing on the street. What an amazing experience that was for us in "Mayberry" as we called it. Very sad, seeing the buildings vacant and uncared-for. We can never go back.
