Diaper Discussion

Well it has probably been a long while coming, but I am finally getting ready to jump onto the bandwagon of more eco-friendly diapering options. For some reason lately I have been thinking a lot about making healthier choices: healthier eating, healthier homes, healthier earth, etc. As part of this of course comes the discussion of healthy options for diapers. I know many of you out there are using cloth diapers or diapers or more eco-friendly diapers. I would love to know what you are using and why. We have been looking into lots of different options (cloth vs. chlorine free vs. g-diaper, etc). I'm not on a tirade. . . . goodness knows I appreciate the convenience of disposable, just trying to explore some options to assuage the guilt of filling landfills with my children's diapers. It has been hard (especially overseas) to find options that really work for a family as on the go as we are, but I know it is possible and am really encouraged by all the newer choices that are flooding the market.

So go ahead, post a comment and let me know what you chose and why. And if you are sticking with Pampers, feel free to let us know why, too!

We use Seventh Generation, mainly because they are the least expensive, sort of enviro-friendly. We tried G-diapers for a while. I like them, but they aren't very easy and they clogged our toilet. I ended up throwing most of the inserts away, which in my mind defeated the purpose. I did compost some, which seemed to work if you are into composting. I also really like Nature Babycare. You can only buy them at diapersdotcom. As far as disposables go, they are as close to environmentally friendly you will get. Looking back, I wish I had invested in a cloth system from the beginning and will probably do that for baby #2.

I'm a part time cloth diaper gal. Naps and night time are always disposables because they absorb a lot more, though I could probably switch for nap time. That and rainy season is really hard to wash and line dry.

We used the g-diapers, and same thing, giant toilet clogs. The diaper covers themselves are GREAT if you put cloth prefolds in instead of the inserts. I usually uses chinese prefold like things, and then a decent diaper cover. I don't really like the All-in-ones, but I know some people swear by them. Check out craigslist, I hear people sell some diaper stuff on there, and as long as you wash it in hot water, probably just as good as buying new.

Also, look into elimination communication. I got a book called the diaper-free baby by Christine Gross-Loh, and I wish I had had it with Clark(he'd scream every time he'd pee in his diaper...he hated it). I'm definitely going to give it a try with #2. It sounds funky at first, but in a weird way makes sense too.

sorry way too much info, hope some of it helps

We use cloth (Except at the moment when we're prepping to move--too much extra work and I don't have room to pack them all with us on the plane with the new bag restrictions (I think that we'd spend more money having another checked bag then we will on diapers for the week.)

I have several different ones--some All-in-ones, some pocket diapers, some diapers and seperate covers. And I like them all for various reasons (all-in-ones work the most like disposables, so hubby loves them, the pocket mean I can stuff them with plenty of inserts to last through naps and night, and those as well as the ones that use covers dry faster).

Let me know if you want more info--I have several links that I used the info from to decide what to get.

And just to try to sway you--I honestly haven't noticed too much extra work (except when he's sick or something and the poops are REALLY gross). I mean, with kids, you are already doing laundry constantly--what is another load? :)
