Cherry Blossoms

One of my favorite things about Korea is the variety the seasons bring. Though it seemed to take it's time arriving this year, spring is here in full bloom. I absolutely love spring here. Korea is covered with beautiful blooming pastel tinted flowers.

The first experience I had with cherry blossoms was when we lived in DC just after we were married. We braved the crowds and ventured down to the tidal basin to enjoy the cherry blossoms that line from the Jefferson Monument to the FDR Monument. They were beautiful, forming soft pastel canopies, raining down small blossoms. I was absolutely in awe of the blossoms.

When we arrived in Seoul for the first time, it was just starting to be cherry blossom season. Unlike DC, though, the blossoms are native, and everywhere. The blossoms are not just on one street, or in one park, they are everywhere. They are on street corners, in parks, alongside train tracks, in yards, literally everywhere. The extraordinary part of the Korean cherry blossoms is just how ordinary they are.

The block where we live in Busan is amazing at this time of year. The blossoms fill the sidewalks, snowing down on you with each light breeze. The hillsides take on a pink tint, and the flowers are everywhere. I absolutely love this season in Korea!

The entire hill is pink with blossoms.
