Shortly before spring break, Emily's class planted several small seeds in dixie cups and brought them home to watch them grow. She was so fantastically excited about the idea of growing something, but I was left worried about what would happen if her small dixie cup yielded disappointing results. Growing what Emily thinks "is probably a flower" turned into the highlight of the day as she watered the seeds, placed them in the sunny window and checked to see their growth.
I was pleasantly surprised when she woke me (far too early) to excitedly tell me that her cup had small green sprouts in the bottom. Not only did her seeds sprout, they have grown quite prolifically, quickly outgrowing the bounds of the small disintigrating cup. We went ahead and picked up a new pot and some soil and the girls were thrilled to help me transfer Emily's plant to a new home.
These girls (and their mother) would love to have a summer garden this year. Filled with fruit and veggies. . . . needing watering, weeding, and tending. For the next few years a windowsill garden is as close as we will get, but we will continue to make the most of this and enjoy watching our tiny seeds to sprout into what will "probably" be a flower. A red one according to Hannah.
Adding the dirt. Please forgive topless Hannah. She seems to feel that clothing is optional when at home . . . at least she keeps them on at school!
Adding some gravel.
A little drink.
"Probably a flower" plant.
