Tooth Fairy

I sent Emily off to school today with a full, complete mouthful of teeth, and this is how she came home to me this afternoon:

Several of the student's in Emily's kindergarten class have already lost teeth, and Emily has been asking for quite awhile when she would be loosing her first tooth. She's one of the younger ones in her class and honestly wasn't showing any signs of a loose tooth so I kept reassuring her it would be later. . . .  not quite yet. Imagine my surprise when the phone rang around lunch time and it was Emily's sweet Kindergarten teacher calling to tell me Emily had lost her first tooth and that she wanted to talk to me. Emily was thrilled to tell me she was just eating her lunch and out popped her tooth. I could tell she was both excited and proud of this monumental achievement. And she got her name on the tooth paper for the month, something she's been waiting for!

We put the tooth under her pillow and she waited excitedly for the famed tooth fairy to bring her a precious reward (which amounted to roughly $2.50). She was thrilled. The inhabitant of the bottom bunk, however, was terrified. She went to bed telling me over and over to not let the tooth fairy steal her teeth. . . . and to make sure the tooth fairy didn't touch her or make fairy noises near her. It made me pause and wonder why we concoct these crazy stories . . . why can't we just give her a hug and toss the tooth?! Between the tooth fairy and Easter bunny we've really got some doozies out there! To Hannah's relief she found her mouth with teeth all in tact in the morning. What a relief!

So my little girl's smile is looking a bit awkward. . . . and gappy. It reminds me how big she is, and how quickly the time has flown! Here's to big girl teeth, and all the other stuff that is bound to go with it!

What's the Korean tradition for losing teeth? Congratulations Emily! Hope she enjoys her many more encounters with the tooth fairy.
