Beach Season Begins!

The weather patterns this year were pretty interesting. Fall arrived late. Winter lasted forever. Spring was slow to arrive and felt like it lasted for about two weeks. By mid-May the weather was finally warm enough to usher in beach season (at least for the kids). The water still seems cold for the adults, but it didn't deter the kids from taking the plunge!

Koreans are really funny about beach season. There is a day that officially (and arbitrarily) marks the start of beach season. The inner tube rentals come out, the umbrellas pop up up and down the beach, the food stalls open their doors, and the beaches are crowded. And I mean body-to-body crowded. Just before we arrived in Busan Haeundae Beach actually set the Guinness World Record for the most beach umbrellas in one place. Then at another randomly chosen date beach season ends (mid-August). Now the part of this that is odd, and that during beach season the beaches are packed. But on either side the beaches are blissfully empty. The day before beach season begins the beach will be virtually empty, but the day it begins everyone shows up in mass. I think it factors into the pack mentality that exists here.

Not loving the crowds, and the attention our very white children attract we tend to hit the beach hard early and late in the season and lay low and avoid it during peak season. It makes for some nice empty beaches for us to enjoy! So for the next month (or until the baby arrives) we will likely park it at the beach for the weekend!

No qualms about water temperature.

Maddie wasn't so sure what to think. . .

Emily and McKenna

Mermaid Emily

Silly Hannah

Notice Maddie's carefully placed feet. She didn't love touching the sand.

McKenna the car. She has traditionally not loved touching the sand, but took a brave step and let Tyler bury her, too!

Hannah and Macyn, two crazy little girls.
